Acts 19:13-16
Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. [And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

Our identity in Christ confers on us a degree of authority and recognition that exonerates us from any dominion of the enemy but if we fail to realize the powers and authority we possess as Christians, we will become susceptible to varying attacks and assault from the enemy and his cohorts. In this life there will always be questions for you to answer and I can tell you that all the questions we will require to answer stems from the question of identity. Just as in the above scripture, situations, challenges, problems, events constantly ask us this simple question, who are you? Note that the answer to this question will determine the outcome.

If like the seven sons of Sceva, our identity is based on what some third party have said and not on a personal revelation then we will suffer crisis. Those guys understood who Jesus and Paul were, they saw their acts and recognized that they were not just mere men but could not see themselves in the same light, so they sought to operate under that third party identity but this did not work for them. I see a lot of Christians today try to address situations that question their identity in the same way, some will say ‘ according to my Pastor, I am born again’ while this may be true but your being born again is not because the Pastor said but because you know that your life has been regenerated. If you don’t know for yourself, you cannot experience it for yourself. God does not have grand children or step children. We are all by our new birth the children of God and we all have equal access and personal relationship with him. It is on this premise that we can lay claim to our identity and the privileges that comes with it.

Friend, note that every evil that comes your way is from the devil and when he comes knocking, he is simply first asking you this same question ‘ who are you?’ if you identify yourself as the Son of God who knows and understands his rights as a Christian, he will recognize and leave but when you don’t then you give him the room and and authority over you. This is simply because there cannot be vacuum in leadership, somebody must be in charge at all times and by default, the devil is in charge of this world but because Christ has won the victory and handed the crown over to the Christians, then we have victory and authority over the devil but we must establish and stamp our authority otherwise the devil will try to usurp our authority. This is simple, your victory in life is in your identity. When you know who you are in Christ, you will reign, rule and conquer. Demons will know you, sickness, diseases, poverty will know you as a no go area, you become untouchable to them but if you don’t know or you suffer from misplaced identity, then you are bound to suffer many stripes just like the sons of Sceva. I pray that the Lord will continue to open your eyes and reveal to you your true identity and all the privileges that come with this knowledge in Jesus name.
