John 3:14 -17 –And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but bhave eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
Romans 8:1-2 – There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
Genesis 2:16-17 –And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
The first time death or dying was mentioned in the bible was in Genesis and the first time death occurred in the bible was at the fall when Adam and Eve partook of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and disobeyed God . Since then, death has reigned over mankind. God did not create mankind to die that is why we still feel uncomfortable with death. We were created to live forever like God. As a result of death reigning over mankind, death began to reign over all creation.
Man was meant to have dominion over all the earth and all that is in it; but after man fell, the entire creation fell with him and evil replaced good, fear replaced love, death replaced life and the devil relocated God in the lives of mankind. But thank God for Jesus Christ, He came to pay the price for our sins. The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23.
The word death in Hebrew is ‘Muwth’. In Greek, three words connote death ‘Thanatos’, ‘Anairesis’ and ‘Teleute’. Death never means cessation, it means separation.
‘Thanatos’ – means
- a) Separation of the soul (spiritual part of man) from the body (the material part). The body ceasing to function and turning to dust.
- b) The separation of man from God. Adam and Eve died the day they disobeyed God. Genesis 2:17. The spirit of man is disconnected from the Spirit of God. Everyone born after Adam was born into the same spiritual state of spiritual death / separation from God. Death is the opposite of life, however, it does not denote non- existence. As spiritual life is ‘conscious existence in unity with God’ so spiritual death is ‘conscious existence in separation from God’. This is as a result of the sin of Adam and Eve in Genesis 3. This is consequential death.
‘Anairesis’ – signifies the taking of a life or putting to death, Acts 8:1 murder of Stephen. This is a result of the evil men that murdered Stephen. This is forced death.
‘Teleute’ – an end, limit i.e. end if life. Death of Herod Matthew 2:15. The departure of a person from the earth. The end of their existence on earth. This has more to do with limit of existence and not the reason of death. In John 3:14-17, the bible says anyone who believes in Jesus Christ ‘should not perish but have eternal life’. The word perish in Greek is ‘Apollumi’ meaning to destroy, to make unseen, to mare, to die, be lost. This means that our faith in Jesus Christ separates us from death and connects us to divine life. The God quality of life. One of the benefits of salvation is deliverance and freedom from death. In Christ, we now reign over death, the way death reigned over mankind. But unless you know it, believe it and act on it, the devil will deprive you of your victory through ignorance and fear.
At the fall, the spirit of Adam and Eve got separated from God and 930 years later, the body of Adam returned to dust. When we received Christ Jesus, our spirit got re-connected to God and at the resurrection we will receive new bodies like Christ did at his resurrection. However, right now on earth as a result of our being spiritually connected with and alive to God, we have authority to stop death in our mind, sickness and diseases in our body, debt in our finances, break ups in our relationship, etc. After the fall, everything in the life of Adam and Eve began to fall apart progressively, in like manner after the new birth of our spirit everything in our live begin to progressively come together and alive because the same spirit that raised Jesus Christ from the dead dwells inside of you and quickens your mortal bodies to glory of his Holy name. Friend, you have victory and dominion over death.
