The Supernatural Name of Jesus
Acts 4:12 – Salvation comes no other way; no other name has been or will be given to us by which we can be saved, only this one. (Message Translations)
Acts 4:12 – And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. (English Standard Version)
Acts 4:12 – And in no other is there salvation: for there is no other name under heaven, given among men, through which we may have salvation. (The Bible in Basic English)
Everything in the Bible lives up to its name. One of the purposes of giving name is for identity and status. The name of a thing enables us to identify and classify it. When our Lord Jesus was to be born, the angel of the Lord instructed Mary to name the child Jesus because He shall save His people from their sins.
So the name connotes the purpose and mission of our Lord Jesus on earth. And true to His name, He died and paid for the sins of us all and rose from the dead for our justification. So He got the name by prophecy, by conquest, by it being conferred and by achievement.
Some people say what is in a name? My answer is ‘everything’. When God wanted to change the direction and destiny of Abram He changed his name; when He wanted to turn Jacob’s life around He called Him Israel; when God wanted to open the womb of Sarai, He changed her name to Sarah. So there is a lot of treasure in the name as well as curses. So be aware!
We will be exploring the magnitude of the salvation that the name of Jesus has brought for us. When people think of salvation they think of freedom from sin only; while that is true that is not all. The word ‘saved’ in the above scripture is a Greek word called ‘soteria’ meaning:
Saving – Deliverance from and preservation from destruction and judgment
Saved from Enemies
Saved from Sins
Deliverance from slavery
Health, preservation of life and physical health
Salvation from physical infirmity
All kinds of deliverances
Final and complete deliverance from all curses including death
Philippians 2:9-11 For this reason God has put him in the highest place and has given to him the name which is greater than every name; So that at the name of Jesus every knee may be bent, of those in heaven and those on earth and those in the underworld, And that every tongue may give witness that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
