The Power of God’s Love – Part 1

Jeremiah 31:3 – The LORD appeared to us in the past. He said, “I have loved you with a love that lasts forever. I have kept on loving you with faithful love. (NIRV).

In the next few days we will explore the power of God’s love. The first question is what is God’s love,  and who is God? It is the nature of a person that tells who he is, what he stands for and what to expect from them. Someone asked God in the bible who he was and he defined and explained Himself to the person. Moses in conversation with God asked God how he would like to be addressed to the people, the following was his answer. Exodus 3:13-15 -Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”  God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ “…………… This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.

I am who I am in Hebrew is Eheyeh Asher Eheyeh, meaning the self existent one, the eternal, the ever present and living one, one who has always been and will always be. In the New Testament apostle John defined God  in 1 John 4:8 – ….. God is love.

Different types of love were highlighted in the bible. In the English translation of the bible the different types of love were not differentiated. But in the Greek translation of the bible, they were differentiated. The following are the different type of love outlined in the bible,

Philieo (Greek) – this is the type of love that exists between boyfriend and girl friend. It is based on mutual satisfaction.

Eros (Greek) – Lust, self seeking love. The word erotic came from it.

Stergo (Greek) – the type of love that exists between parents and children and family members, love for your nation or kindred.

Agape (Greek) – self sacrificial love. The unconditional love. This is the God kind of love.

Therefore the love of God can be defined as the self sacrificing of the self existing God. He did not have to do it but he chose to do it anyway. Because he is self existent, he does not need us to exist we need him to exist, as a matter of fact he created us. He however, to chose to love us unconditionally. Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. All the other types of love have strings attached to them but this type of love have no strings. God loves you completely and unconditionally.

God’s love for you is one hundred percent  His decision. it has nothing to do with you or your performance or lack of it. God loves you in spite of you. He began to love you before YOU knew he existed. Friend God loves you and he loves you unconditionally. But you have to know and accept his Love for you to benefit from it. It IS a gift not a reward for works or service done.

1 John 4:19 – We love Him because He first loved us.
