Genesis 3:8 – 10 – 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?” Because I was naked; so I hid.”

Hebrews 2: 14-15 – 14 the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death–that is, the devil and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

Revelation 1:18 I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

1 John 4:18 – There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

The Greek word for fear is Phobos – meaning flight from being scared, fear, terror, intimidation of the adversaries, reverential fear. The word phobia came from it. People’s fear ranges from one thing to another. While some are afraid of success, some are afraid of failure, some are afraid of riches others are afraid of poverty. Some are afraid of water others are afraid of dying of lack of water. Some are afraid of the marriage, others are afraid of not being married. Some are afraid of promotion, others are afraid of not being promoted. All fear came with the fall and are of the devil. The first persons to be afraid in bible were Adam and Eve after the fall in the Garden. The devil rules with fear but God rules with Love. Fear tolerated is faith contaminated. The more you concentrate on what is against you, the more you come under the dominion of fear. However, if you concentrate on the truth that God is for you, you begin to grow in confidence and you will see new possibilities.

For the purpose of this study we will be focusing on fear in light of being scared, terrorised or intimidation of the adversaries. The first reference to fear was after the fall of man in the Garden of Eden. Fear came with the fall. One of the characteristics of the righteous is being bold as lion. Fear came with the fall but its eradication came with salvation through Christ. There is difference between being tempted to fear and succumbing to fear. You could be tempted to fear but you should not succumb to it. We are commanded over 365 times in the bible to ‘fear not’.

Fear has been a major tool of intimidation to stop people from attaining the great height God has purposed for them. Fear makes cowards of God’s people. Friend, you are in Christ and Jesus has overcome fear for you. So you are an overcomer. The first thing you need to know is that FEAR IS NOT OF AND NOT FROM GOD. Therefore you should not tolerate it in any shape of form. Being frightened is manifest proof that fear is in you in that specific area of concern.

The bible instructs us to cast our care on God, failure to do so the care creates fear. Fear did not come when you get frightened, rather it manifested itself as being resident in you through your action of fright and you must get rid of it. Fear is not a gift from God it is a gift from the devil. The second thing is, fear must not be tolerated. Fear manifests itself in different ways, through shyness, outburst of frustration or rage, avoidance, making excuses etc. Most of shy people are under the dominion of fear. The people that are always loud and want to be heard above other people are not necessarily confident. So you should identify fear, its root and confront or else it would grow and rob you of faith and confidence.
