1 Thessalonians 5:23

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God] your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Look at the progression, it is the spirit first then the soul and the body. Meaning we are fist spirit and we have a soul that lives in a body. Only one third of the human is visible while two third is not. Only one third gets saved instantaneously at new birth, and this should translate to the soul and the body.

If the soul and body remains unsaved, then they will war against the spirit. It will now be a battle between the spirit and the body and the battle ground is the soul, the mind. The part of you that overcomes is that part that is more developed to the point that it overwhelms the other parts of the human. If your spirit is so developed that it influences your mind or soul then your spirit will prevail over your flesh to do the will of God.

If the spirit is starved and the flesh is nourished daily with the things we see, feel or hear, then the mind or soul is subject to the will of the flesh then what you find yourself doing is the will of the flesh and manifesting the works of the flesh. If this is allowed to continue by not immediately arresting the flesh through the empowerment of the spirit, the flesh continues to dominate and the salvation which the spirit gained initially may become dormant. This is what we referred to as backsliding Christianity, this continues until such a time when the spirit is re-ignited and assume position to dominate the flesh, then the battle starts again. Paul said, I die daily meaning we need to daily subject our flesh to the dictates of the spirit so that we don’t lose the salvation that we have received and eventually save our soul and spirit.
