Paul defines stronghold as an ”argument or high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God”. A stronghold is a point of operation from where Satan can keep the unbeliever captive or the believer incapacitated.
Stronghold is anything that holds a person back from walking in the fullness of what God has intended for their life and anything that hinders their freedom to do so. A dictionary definition tells us that stronghold can either be a fortified structure such as a fortress or prison, or it can be a place of refuge, a secured sanctuary. It is a place that can either imprison a person, or keep them safe. It’s like something that we have fortified, built up in our lives that are now struggling to remove it. They are like a planting a tree. While it is still small it is easy to bend and mold, but when that tree gets to be 25-30 years old it cannot be bent, the roots are deep and it becomes a major project to move. Some strongholds are good: those built up by the Word of God are good but those against the word are harmful.
How Stronghold Begins
Matthew 11:28-30 – Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Satan looks for the believer’s weaknesses to use as ammunition against him. He locates a vulnerable area of your life (a difficult life situation, a character weakness, or a past failure) and concentrates on that area, if you disobey and repent, God forgives and restores, according to His promise of I John 1:9. If you disobey and continue to sin, Satan interprets that as an invitation to continue his activities, and a pattern begins to develop and Satan begins able to dominate your mind and body more and more.
A person may physically be able to perform a task, but if that person has come to believe, or has formed the idea in their mind that they are not able, or capable to do it then their own beliefs and feelings of doubt, unworthiness, inadequacy, fear of failure, anxiety etc. can create and become a stronghold against them. It could become a stumbling block before their feet and a hurdle too high for them to jump.
When a person’s life has been full of negative or abusive events it can create within them many forms of insecurity, negativity, unhealthy feelings and emotions, and can create within them a lot of strongholds, (self defeating thoughts and beliefs. Stronghold includes situations when a person does not believe that the circumstances of their life will ever change for the better because things have been so bad for so long.
Also, stronghold begins with rebellion; when we give Satan permission to enter our lives through consistence disobedience that eventually becomes a norm. He starts with one vice then it leads to another, and another and another. Eventually we have a full blown stronghold with all the rights and privileges that come with them! … When we don’t stand to confront Satan by using our spiritual authority and weapons to destroy strongholds, Satan will continue to “steal, kill, and destroy” (John 10: 10).
