Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart! Psalm 37:4

Joy is defined as the emotion evoked by well-being, success or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires. The expression or exhibition of such emotion is a state of happiness. Only in God can we find and experience true joy. If God has given us joy as one of the fruits of the Spirit, that implies that God is Joy personified. Wherever people know love and worship God, His love instils abundant joy that He alone can give to the hearts of His worshippers. He instructed us to come into His presence with praise because God dwells in a joyful atmosphere. His presence takes away heaviness of the heart, rekindles hope and stirs up Faith Psalm 16:11.

As believers, the reward of doing God’s will is that our joy will be increased. This state of joy attracts blessings. God loves a cheerful giver. This implies that when we give cheerfully, we automatically attract the blessings attached to giving. When we joyfully and not grudgingly obey the will/instruction of God, we will definitely get our reward. Joy is a powerful gift from God. Sin is a major contender. The enemy’s target is to ensure that believers do not do the will of God so he can accuse and condemn. Guilt steals joy. When joy is lost, faith will not be expressed.

The good news is that God has made provisions for us – Romans 8:1. According to research, children from joyful families come out to be more emotionally stable, productive, and eventually become great parents. They radiate positive energy around them, attract positive minded friends and prosper even in their health. We understand that situations in life could make us sorrowful at times but remembering God’s promises gives us great and unexplainable joy. Hope and faith in God comforts us.

I saw the video of a young Liberian boy, who was infected with the Ebola disease. This boy was said to have danced his way back to sound health. He kept on listening to his favourite song and danced so much that he entertained the other infected people in the camp. After 2 weeks, he was certified free from Ebola and was discharge. Whao! I learnt a different lesson about joy after watching this video. Joy also heals, the Bible says that a merry heart is like a medicine. The devil cannot stand joy. It is a huge barrier for him to scale over. Joy weakens the devil.

Jesus went through every form of sorrow and sadness on the cross of Calvary so that we believers can live a life of joy. Joy is our right! Joy is our gift! Joy is our password to living the life God promised us!
