Identifying and Destroying Strongholds: Gideon’s Story

Judges 6:2 KJV [2] And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.

In today’s edition, I will explain further on how to identify strongholds and deal with them using the story of Gideon and how God used him to deliver the children of Israel from captivity, out of strongholds into their inheritance in God. The Israelites initially ran into strongholds to hide from the Medianites. This eventually became a captivity for them for seven good years. The stronghold became a bondage as they were unable to come out of it for the fear of the Medianites.

Judges 6:10 KJV And I said unto you, I am the Lord your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.

Disobedience as a stronghold:

Disobedience to God and His instructions according to His Word could be very devastating with grave consequences. In the above Scripture, one of the reasons the children of Israel went into bondage was because they disobeyed God. 2 Corinthians 10:6 says, ‘And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.’

When you have the culture of disobeying what God tells you, it becomes a stronghold that if not dealt with will pull you down and cut you shot from the promises of God just as it did King Saul – 1 Sam 15:22-23. God promised the throne to him and his generation but through disobedience, he lost it. Likewise, the children of Israel throughout the book of Judges kept falling in and out of captivity because of disobedience to God. Your life could be better and you could move faster if you deal with the stronghold of disobedience in your life.

The Bible says that if you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land – Isaiah 1:19. Friend, it’s time for you to come out of that stronghold of disobedience, take the Word of God as your guide and instruction and begin to do according to the Word. Use this as a starting point to practising obeying God and watch how your life will experience a lift.

Judges 6:11 KJV. And there came an angel of the Lord, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abi-ezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

Fear as a stronghold:

the reason they hid from the Medianites in a stronghold was because they were afraid. Fear will stop one from making progress. It incapacitates, paralyses, and makes its victim die even before the attack. Fear deprives its victim of the joy of the present in horror anticipation of a disastrous future. Fear is one of devil’s tool to torment his victim. The torment is to make them lose faith in whatever promise existed and submit to the negative thought or suggestion the enemy throws at the victim.

Whenever you subscribe to the emotion of fear because of the negative feeds from the enemy, you are only alluding to lies of the enemy and if this persists, one may begin to confess and act the fear. Fear is a product of wrong meditation on the lies of the enemy. Fear is a stronghold that has to be pulled down and nothing else can do this except the Word of God. Whenever the enemy throws negative suggestions into your mind, know immediately that this is a lie because he is the master of liars and there is no truth in him at all. Immediately, get the truth of God’s Word that is contrary to the lie and begin to meditate on it instead of meditating on the lies. Then, confess the Word to the point that the negative feed is completely erased from your memory.

Judges 6:13 KJV. And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the Lord be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all His miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt? but now the Lord hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.

Unbelief as a stronghold:

whenever you refuse to accept the truth of the Word of God and hold on to a lie, then you are acting in unbelief. Gideon and Israel in the above Scripture had lived to belief that God was no longer with them and that that was why they were in captivity. They had used their present predicament to judge who God was and what He could do. The moment you allow God to diminish in your heart and exalt your situation above the knowledge of God, then you’re in a stronghold. No wonder they were under this bondage for good seven years until they began to cry to God. Don’t ever allow your situation to define the place of God in your life but rather allow God in you to define your situation. Unbelief will cut one off from the promise of God. According to the Scripture in Hebrews 4, the children of Israel failed to enter into God’s rest even though it was promised to them simply because of their unbelief.

Hebrews 4:6 and 11 (KJV) Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: (11) Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

Friend, we need to believe God for who He is and to believe His Word and promises. The Bible says they are yes and amen. God is not a man that He should lie, nor the son of man that He should change His mind, He has the habit of doing what He promised. Whatever promise He has given you will surely come to pass if you hold on to the profession of your faith and keep on believing. Do not subscribe to unbelief, it’s a stronghold and the enemy’s tool to stop you from attaining the promise. The antidote to unbelief is the Word of God. Grab it, meditate on it, believe it and confess it daily.

Judges 6:15 KJV And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? Behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.

Poor self esteem:

This can simply be defined as seeing yourself less than who God sees you to be or says you are. A lot of people, just like Gideon, define themselves based on their background, up-bringing and environment. For you to rise above your present environment, you must start to see yourself based on what the Word of God says you are. Your spiritual location should take precedence over your physical location. Jesus Christ came out of Bethlehem to save the whole world. God called Gideon to save Israel but he previously saw himself as nobody because he was the last born of a poor family in the last family of the last tribe in Israel. He couldn’t see himself as being qualified for the job. Stop seeing yourself as not qualified for that job, that lady, that man, that position, that breakthrough, that success or that assignment. God has qualified you, He has chosen you in Christ before the foundation of the earth. Change your thinking pattern now, it’s a stronghold that the enemy has used to delay you till now. Start seeing yourself in the light of God’s Word and liberate yourself from low and poor self esteem. You are a creature of destiny and you are meant for the top.

Judges 6:25-26 KJV And it came to pass the same night, that the Lord said unto him, Take thy father’s young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it: [26] And build an altar unto the Lord thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down.

Dealing with strongholds:

The only way to deal with any stronghold in your life is to pull it down with an external force. The law of inertia states that every matter will remain in a place of rest unless an external force is applied. So, the strongholds in your mind will persist unless you attack them with the Word of God just like Gideon, in the above Scripture, had to pull down the temple of Baal. How do you do this? Literarily, you begin to plead the blood of Jesus over your mind and cast down those wrong thoughts and imagination. Thereafter, begin to replace those thoughts with the Word of God which signifies, according to the Scripture, building a new temple or stronghold based on the Word of God. Once the Word of God has a strong hold over your life, then you are on the path to total liberation and deliverance, then you will experience a lift in Jesus’ name. Amen!
