Fasting and Prayer
Isaiah 58:6-7 – Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?
Fasting through prayer is one of the spiritual exercises that Christians undertake for spiritual rejuvenation. It is one of our power activators in the world of the spirit. Please be aware that fasting does not change God, it changes us. Before you fasted God had already given you promises in His word to show you that He is interested in and approves of your welfare and victorious living. Therefore, fasting does not make Him more or less willing to bless you. Remember, He has already blessed us with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places. Ephesians 1:3.
Fasting is not meant to be used a weapon, as it is not one of the spiritual armours mentioned in Ephesians chapter 6. It prepares and positions us spiritually for change and it enables us to be able to spend time in God’s presence to receive what he has already provided for us in Christ.
Fasting without adequate time in prayer is only hunger strike. Prayer without properly engaging God’s word is like a boiling pot without anything in it. It is praying God’s word back to Him in faith that makes your prayer effective. Fasting and prayer enables you to be focused and deny your flesh some control. When you fast, you are disciplining your flesh and strengthening your spirit. As a result you are able to hear clearly from God without any distraction.
The art of praying and fasting has been lost as a result of the hustle and bustle of this generation and busyness of people. But it has to be restored. You need to set time aside to separate yourself and go on this spiritual exercise for spiritual rejuvenation.
Acceptable fasting and its benefits are outlined in Isaiah 58. Fasting should always be coupled with prayer and prayer should be done in the word. Some of the benefits of fasting correctly include Divine health, burden removal, yoke destruction, restoration, promotion and prosperity. Friends, I encourage you to undertake this spiritual exercise from time to time and you will encounter sudden promotion and your spiritual sensitivity will be improved. Please remember it is not how long you fast and pray, it is how well you spend the time with God that really counts.
