BEARING GOOD FRUITS – Part 1
One of the valuable things about the word of God is, it doesn’t only tell us what to do; it also tells us how we should do it.
Today, we will be dealing with the fruit of the Spirit. Our text is: Galatians 5:22-26
22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25Since we live by the Spirit let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
These are the good fruits of a Christian. To be a Christian is to be Christ-like / act like Christ. Jesus acted like God because He was God. All children will have characteristics of their parents. Most parents will tell you that strangers will tell them how their children have their features like the eyes, nose, complexion, etc. This is also true for people adopting children. It may walk like its dad or talk like its mum. If we go back to the beginning, in Genesis, it says we are made in the image and likeness of God. This is how we should be just as ‘like begot like.’
The Bible says in Matthew 7:16 – “…by their fruits you will know them.”
People partake of the fruit not of the tree. You rarely hear a person say, ‘I don’t like pear or lemon because I hate the look of its tree. I don’t like its bark or leaves.’ People will like or dislike lemon or pear or apple because of its taste. People will perceive God on how you behave. You cannot tell someone we serve a forgiving and loving God if we ourselves do not love and are not kind.
People will doubt God and not the Christian when rotten fruit is displayed. God is the gardener, Jesus is the tree, and we are the branches who display the fruits. We even say it: the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, but you can have a very good tree and rotten fruit (good parents / bad kids). People don’t have a problem with the product: it’s the sales man.
To be like our Father, we must emulate the same traits. The Bible tells us how we can do this for we will never produce good fruit if we are not led by the Holy Spirit because the fruit is of the Spirit and the Bible says this in Romans 8: 14 – those who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God.
That means that those who are not led by the Spirit are not the children of God even though they may be Christians. In Romans, it says, ” It is the Spirit Himself who will testify that we are the children of God.
