Proverbs 15:13,15 : A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken. All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.
Proverbs 17:22 – A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
Worship is not just an act but an experience that will knit your heart together with God. When you experience true worship from the heart, you will discover that you will be lifted off the terrestrial realm. Worship brings you to a realm where everything just seems to be all about him and not about you or whatever state you are in. It’s an experience that momentarily takes away all your worries and stress, connects your heart to God and relieves you of all your cares and burden. This happens because at such a time your focus is on Him and Him alone. Your mind corresponds with your spirit and shuts down to any remembrance of hurt, pain, sorrow or any cares that would have hitherto captivated your focus. This is the experience of worship and this can be a permanent life style. The big question is this; Why worry when you can worship?
Worry means to torment oneself with or suffer from disturbing thoughts and if it is allowed to linger unabated it will lead to depression. Note that it starts from thoughts, what occupies the center of your heart, what you give attention to and what steals your focus. Worry is a negative thought of the situation you are in, it is different from trying to figure out something, it’s more of negativity and torture which will only lead further down the depression lane. If it comes from the heart then you have a choice and power to control what you allow to dominate your thought. You can chose to be merry or sorrowful depending on where your focus is. The above scripture in proverbs clearly compares the state of a merry heart and a sorrowful one. Chapter 15:13 says a merry heart makes a cheerful countenance. When your heart is merry it will show on your face. Just stop for a minute and try to sing a song you like looking at your face in the mirror. Compare this with what your face will look like when your heart is filled with worries. Proverbs 17:20 says a merry heart is like a medicine. It cures you of worry and depression. People take medicines to get out of depression but here the scripture recommends a better option; A merry heart. You don’t have to see a consultant to get it, you don’t have to visit a chemist to get it, neither do you need to pay to get it. The question then is; how can I be merry?
Ephesians 5:19- Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
It’s simple, you just have to do it yourself. when your heart is full of spiritual songs, hymns and melody to the Lord, there is no way you can be moody and sorrowful. They don’t go together. When you fill your heart with hurts, pains and cares, it is worry but when you fill your heart with songs, hymns and melody to the Lord, it is worship. I said in my last edition that man is created for worship and worship is intentional but you must be conscious of your object of worship which is a function of where your heart is focused. If your heart is focused on your troubles and challenges, that defines your worship but if your heart is focused on who God is, then that is your worship. The bible says in Isaiah 26:3 ‘Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee : because he trusteth in thee’. So be conscious of this and keep your heart stayed on God. Remember also that what you give attention to becomes bigger in your heart. If it’s your troubles, then they become bigger but if it’s God, then he becomes bigger in your heart than your trouble.
I charge you today to change your thought pattern and let your heart be dominated by the thoughts of God and who he is, let your heart be filled with songs and melody at all times. You might ask, how can I sing when am going through pains? Well worship may not require you to open your mouth, it comes from the heart and it’s a choice you have to make. Thinking about your situation will not make it better but filling your heart with wonderful thoughts of God and what he can do makes your heart merry and this has the supernatural ability to heal you permanently. Once again I ask you the question; why worry when you can worship? Chose to merry, chose worship and be healed in Jesus name.
