Daniel 6:3 – Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.
Mark 7:37 – And they were overwhelmingly astonished, saying, He (Jesus) has done everything excellently (commendably and nobly)! He even makes the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak
Daniel 5:12, 14 – Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation. I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee.
Excellence means, to go beyond, to exceed, to surpass in good qualities, or laudable achievement, to outdo, to perform meritorious action, to be eminent, illustrious, distinguished for superior achievements, in an unusual degree. It also means being of great value or worth, to complete. The bible says in Colossians 2:10, we are complete in Christ that means in Christ we are destined for a life of excellence. In Deuteronomy 28:13, we are told that we shall be above only and never beneath. The Christian life is not the higher life as some say; it is actually the highest form of living in all of God’s creation, because it is the God type of life.
Please be aware that two types of excellence operate on earth they are natural excellence and supernatural excellence. Natural excellence is achieved through human hard work and experimenting with many things, this is good and acceptable before God and man but not the best that God has for you. Supernatural excellence is a spiritual quantity that also has physical manifestation. It emanates from the Spirit of God himself and operates from the inside of the every believer that would yield to Him. While the natural excellence is limited to the natural realm, supernatural excellence has its roots deep into the realms of the spirit and operates in two realms- spiritual and physical. “So deep that the heathen king in the above scripture in Daniel called it the ‘spirit of the gods”. Excellence is a spirit that builds an appetite and ability in to achieve the best possible and attain the greatest height in all you do.
Excellence is not a destination but a journey. Today’s excellence is tomorrow’s mediocrity. The good is the enemy of the best. To this end Jesus came to restore us back to an excellent lifestyle. It goes beyond just being excellent in one area and terrible in the other but rather being excellent in everything, in marriage, business, relationships, academics – everything.
My objective it to expose you to excellence in every area of life, and it starts with the spiritual aspect. From the above scriptures we can see that excellence is a spirit and not just a feature. We also see that Jesus life was of excellence in everything He did so we have an example to follow. One of the purposes of the Holy Spirit is to enable us live the life of heaven on earth in order to present the glory of our God to the world. However, you may be a Christian and not be living in excellence because the spirit of excellence needs a yielded body to dwell in to manifest. That spirit is the Spirit of God. I have seen and heard people desire excellence in their lives but they keep falling short one way or another. Don’t get me wrong they made effort and work out how they would achieve their goals but it seemed it did not work out as planned. They are willing but it appears the core was out of place. The reason for this is to achieve excellence in all things not by power or by might but by the Spirit of God. For anyone to always work in excellence, you need a constant infilling and leading of the Holy Spirit. I discovered that all of God’s instructions when carried out end in excellence. For example Daniel and his friends decided not to defile themselves with the king’s meat and they became ten times better than all their mates. The disciples decided to follow Jesus when others left and the Pharisee and Sadducees could not withstand the wisdom and boldness they demonstrated.
Supernatural excellence is superior to natural excellence because with supernatural excellence you will know where to put your efforts and you will not have to do trial and error or experimentation as required under natural excellence to be excellent. When you have the spirit of excellence, you know the end from the beginning and your path is already charted from the beginning whereas in the natural scheme of things it’s mostly a series of guesswork. I leave you with this verse Romans 8:11, But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Friend, excellence is a choice and a gift. Excellence is separating yourself from the average lifestyle i.e. “the popular culture”.
