Proverbs 17:22 – A joyful heart helps healing, but a broken spirit dries up the bones. Romans 14:17 – For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
There is a hormone in the human body called serotonin. It is the ‘feel good’ hormone. It is responsible for the regulation of mood, appetite and sleep. This hormone depletes when you go through tough times or if you find yourself in an unfavourable circumstance or environment. Stress, pain, loss, trouble, etc., cause the level of serotonin to drop. The result of this is weariness of the soul, depression and the loss of will to live. If the serotonin level is left unchecked and not refuelled, it might lead to suicide or death of an individual. One of the ways that God has prepared for us to recuperate our serotonin level is through joy. Joy is one of the major components of God’s kingdom. Jesus indicates in the gospel of John that He wants our joy to be full. He also instructs us not to allow anyone to steal our joy.
The power of joy starts to become real to you when you get the revelation of God’s unconditional love for you. The knowledge of the Father’s love for you puts you on that path of growing and living in the joy of the Lord. The next step is believing the knowledge you have received. Faith is the hand with which we receive from God. You need to believe the love that God has for you and never let it go. Hold fast to the truth that God loves you no matter what your situation may be. As you believe, you begin to experience a flow and multiplication of divine joy. Joy starts its work in you before it works on your situation. Joy is the game changer both in us and around us.
When you have received joy, then you need to begin to declare it to multiply its impact around you. The most effective way to release joy is by declaring the knowledge of God’s love for you. Joy is released and made effective in our lives by first receiving the love that God has given us through Jesus Christ. If you don’t know and believe that God loves you, you will not live a life full of joy. The love that God has for you is unconditional! So, by meditating and speaking God’s unconditional love for you, you release the medicinal power of joy, but if you don’t meditate on it and speak it out, it remains dormant and ineffective. So it’s over to you to partake of the fruit of God’s joy for you.
Isaiah 12:2-3, Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; ‘For the Lord, JEHOVAH, is my strength and my song; He also has become my salvation.’ “3 Therefore with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. The word ‘salvation’ is a compound word. The Greek word is ‘Soteria’ meaning, deliverance from all evil: it also means healing, prosperity, etc. From the above Scripture, we can see that through joy, we draw from the wells of deliverance, healing, and prosperity. If you are aware of the primitive wells, you would know that they are dug very deep in the ground, and to draw water from them, you would need a bucket and a long rope. You tie the bucket to a rope and let it down into the well to draw water up for your use.
In like manner, joy is the tool with which we draw from the depths of God’s provision for us. That is why joy is a valuable treasure that we must keep and protect. Jesus warned the disciples in John 16:22 not to allow anyone to take their joy. Joy is an essential commodity to live above the troubles of life. No matter how much you love God, you will face troubles and the outcomes of the troubles would depend largely on your joy level. If your joy level is low, you may be offended at God, get frustrated and may give up, but if you keep your joy level high, you will go through the fire and the storm and you will overcome them. Having and keeping your joy is not optional, it is a compulsory element for triumphant Christianity. You have all of God’s promises and blessing in Christ but to partake of them, you need joy. Without joy you cannot draw from the well of salvation. To prevent yourself from dying of thirst from all stress and pressures that life brings, you will have to guard and replenish your joy. You protect and replenish your joy by renewing your mind through the Word of God – that God loves you. Declare that you are loved by God and valuable to Him. Always remember that your living in victory is connected to joy. Always declare that the joy of the Lord is your strength and medicine. Sing praises to God for His goodness in the past and be thankful to Him for who He is and His promises of a great future.
Isaiah 61:1-3 “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn, to console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”
