Today we will continue to explore and unveil all the gifts of the Holy Spirit and how to walk in them.
There are 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit and they are in 3 categories. They are as follows: –
Revelation gifts – They reveal something
Word of wisdom, Word of knowledge, Discerning of Spirits
Utterance gifts – They say something
Prophecy, divers kinds of tongues and interpretation of tongues
Power gifts – They do something
Gift of faith, working of miracles, and the gifts of healing
Today we will explore the utterance gifts
1 Corinthians 12: 1- 11
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
1 Corinthians 12:31 – But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.
Utterance/inspirational gifts – The gifts say something. They include prophecy, diver kinds of tongues and the interpretation of tongues.
The gift of prophecy is supernatural utterance in known tongues. The gift of prophecy is the most important of the 3 inspirational gifts because it takes the other two to equal prophecy. When the gift of diverse kinds of tongues and interpretation of tongues are in operation they equal prophecy. The Greek word that is translated “to prophesy” means “to speak for another” it means to speak for God, to be His spokesman.
1 Corinthians 14:1-5, 39
Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification. Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.
The gift of prophecy is for edification, exhortation and comfort 1 Corinthians 14:3. It is different from the office of a prophet. In the gift of prophecy there is no revelation. Whereas, in the office of a prophet, we often find revelation coming forth by prophecy. A good example are the four daughters of Philip who prophesy through the operation of gift of prophecy and the prophet Agabus who operated in the office of a prophet. Acts 21:8- 11.
Note in the simple gift of prophecy there is no foretelling. There is only forth telling.
The gift of diverse kinds of Tongues – it is supernatural utterance by the Holy Spirit in languages never learned by the speaker, not understood by the mind of the speaker, nor necessarily always understood. It is a vocal miracle. It is the prominent of all the utterance gifts. This is because,
- The gift of diverse kinds of tongues and interpretation of tongues are distinctive to this dispensation
- It is manifested when people are baptised in the Holy Ghost
- Paul gave prominence to it because it was misunderstood in the early church
- We are often asked about tongues
- It is the most widely dispersed and most frequently used gift
The values of tongues
Tongues – a supernatural sign – Mark 16:17
Tongues – a devotional gift – 1 Corinthians 14:18 “I thank God I speak in tongues more than you all”
1 Corinthians 12:28- 30 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?
Tongues in public ministry
1 Corinthians 14:27-33
If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret. But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God. Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge. But if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent. For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged. And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
God will use some people in public utterance in tongues. This is a gift and different from the devotional use of tongues. There devotional tongues, we use it as we will but the gifts of divers kinds of tongues manifest as the spirit wills.
Interpretation of tongues – supernatural showing forth by the Spirit of the meaning of an utterance in other tongues. It is not translation of tongues; it is the interpretation of tongues. It is the least of the nine gifts because it is dependent on another gift in order to operate. The purpose of this gift is to render the gift of diver’s kinds of tongues intelligible to the hearers so that the church as well as the possessor of the gift may know what has been said and may be edified.
1 Corinthians 14:13-15, 27-28, 40
For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind…. If anyone speaks in a tongue, two–or at the most three–should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God. But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.
This gifts manifests both in private and public life of a Christian. Please be aware that all these gifts operate as we earnestly desire them by faith.
